Your Dog's First Day Home

You’ve just changed a dog’s life by bringing them into your home, and soon they will change yours with the unconditional love they will give. We want the first day to be just as exciting for you as it is for your new dog, so here are some tips on taking it slow and helping your dog settle in.

  • Establish a space dedicated to your dog as their own retreat. This can be a room, section of your house, or their crate.
    • When you’re crate training your dog, leave the crate open so that they can go in and out whenever they please.
  • Be prepared for accidents! You don’t know your dog’s bathroom habits quite yet, so give them time to make mistakes before they are house trained.
  • If you’re introducing your dog to another pet, take it slow. Just like we don’t get along with everyone right away, it might take some time for both pets to adjust, so give them time. We also suggest giving your current pet(s) something with your new dog’s scent on it to help them adjust.
  • Expect your dog to break the rules frequently in the beginning. They aren’t being stubborn or difficult, they just don’t know the rules of the house yet!
  • Set up a routine. Consistency is key when training. Setting a daily routine for your dog will help them acclimate to their new home more quickly and establish expectations for both you and your dog. Click here for more information on setting up a routine for your dog.
